Rachel Carson Elementary Raises $9,000 for Charity

The fundraiser for Pennies for Patients, which included a successful McTeachers Night at McDonald's in Sammamish March 7, netted nearly $2,000 more than the school's original goal.

They duct-taped their principal to a chair, bought cookies and McDonald's food, and by the end of the night raised $3,700.

Students and families from came out to support the school's "Pennies for Patients" fundraising drive, which has netted altogether $8,800, well beyond the original goal of $7,000.

Pennies for Patients is part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's School & Youth Programs. The society says that through its youth programs, more than $125 million has been raised for research and patient services. Its mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families

Irene Russo, a representative of the School's PTSA, said the McTeacher's Night was particularly successful. At McTeacher Nights, school staff "takes over" a McDonalds location and cooks and serves up food, and McDonalds donates 20 percent of the overall profits to the organization as well as 100 percent of all cookie sales.

At its event, Rachel Carson Elementary had the highest hourly total ever for that store, sold the most cookies and earned the highest total funds of any McTeacher Night there, she said.

In all, the group received $2,200 from food sales, $804 in cookie sales, $640 from students buying strips of duct tape to tape their principal, Mary Cronin, to a chair, and $70 from a cup stacking exhibition.

"The Rachel Carson staff, students and DJ kids did an awesome job," Russo said. "We have to say that we think McDonald's is amazing for their cooperation and help during the night, in letting us and other schools hold this event."
