Sammamish Police Blotter: $1.4 Million Check Stolen in Mail Theft

Several other burglaries and break-ins were reported last week, including one in which as much as $10,000 in jewelry and electronics were stolen.

 

On Wednesday, Jan. 4, a family living on 217th Place NE had mail including a $1.4 million check stolen from their home. The family contacted police after they returned home from a trip and learned that several packages and other pieces of mail had been stolen while they were away. One of the items was a $1,411,200 trust check from the recent sale of a home. An expensive stroller that a neighbor had left in their entryway was also stolen.

There were a number of other burglaries and thefts reported last week as well.

Thursday, Dec. 29

Vandalism: A man living on 216th Place SE contacted police after someone threw a wooden sign post through his vehicle’s window.

Friday, Dec. 30

Driving While License Revoked: Police arrested a 41-year-old Sammamish man after he was pulled over for driving with a suspended license.

Saturday, Dec. 31

DUI: Police arrested a 26-year-old Renton man for suspicion of drunk driving after he was pulled over for speeding. The man did not initially pull over and instead tried to lose police by making a series of quick turns. When police did catch up to the man they found him to be extremely intoxicated. The man was arrested and transported to Issaquah jail.

Larceny: A man living on NE 39th Lane contacted police after his miter saw was stolen from a construction site.

Driving While License Revoked: Police arrested a 20-year-old Sammamish woman for driving with a suspended license after she was pulled over for driving at night with only one working headlight and no rear license plate. During the stop police also smelled marijuana and confiscated a smoking pipe from the passenger.

Reckless Driving: Police arrested a 22-year-old North Bend man for reckless driving after he and a passenger were spotted speeding on a motorbike along East Lake Sammamish Parkway. Neither man was wearing a helmet and the bike had no lights or license plates. Police had to accelerate to 90 mph to catch up to the speeding motorbike, eventually doing so when the rider lost control in a turn.

Burglary: A woman living on SE 5th Street contacted police after she returned home and found that a personal phone book was missing from her kitchen. The woman suspects that her stepdaughter and stepson entered the home through a sliding glass door and took the phone book. She said they had been harassing her because they think she played a role in their father’s death. The woman found a hair tie on the back deck that she said didn’t belong to her.

Sunday, Jan. 1

Larceny: A man living on SE 79th Street contacted police after someone shattered the rear window of his car and stole his wallet. He reported that $250 in Costco cash and $240 in cash were taken, along with various credit and ID cards.

Driving While License Revoked: Police arrested a 44-year-old Fall City man for driving with a suspended license.

Wednesday, Jan. 4

Violation of Court Orders: Police arrested a 55-year-old Issaquah man for violating an anti-harassment order after he attempted to contact his brother.

Thursday, Jan. 5

Burglary: A woman living on 219th Avenue NE contacted police after she returned home and discovered that she had been burglarized. The suspects appeared to enter the home by breaking the glass in a set of French doors at the rear of the house. An estimated $7,000-$10,000 in jewelry and electronics was stolen.

Burglary: A woman living on 212thAvenue NE contacted police after she returned home from work and found that she had been burglarized. The suspects appeared to gain entry to the house by prying open a rear garage door. A backpack, assorted audio CDs, jewelry, miscellaneous papers and a Toyota Prius car fob were stolen. Pictures of a dirty shoe print were submitted into evidence.

Vandalism: A woman living on Trossachs Blvd. SE contacted police after she returned home and was informed by her mother-in-law that someone had tried to enter the house. The mother-in-law had earlier heard breaking glass and someone giggling outside the front door, then looked out the window and saw a man in his mid-30s wearing dark clothes walk away and enter a white four-door car. Police found that the outside porch light and doorbell button had been broken.

Friday, Jan. 6

Larceny: Police arrested a 43-year-old Sammamish woman after she was caught on video shoplifting from the Rite-Aid on the Issaquah-Pine Lake Road.

Homeowners need to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to mail theft and the best thing to do is to get a locking mailbox. By not having a locking mailbox you're basically giving a stranger the key to your home. I bought one 6 years ago and won't ever be without one again. A locking mailbox is a cheap price to pay for piece of mind.
