Avennia Winery is Born From Harmonious Pairing

Their admiration for the music of Miles Davis, such as the album The Birth of the Cool, brought Marty Taucher and Chris Peterson together in business and led to the birth of winery Avennia.

Chris Peterson worships the music of The Grateful Dead. Marty Taucher is a Dave Matthews Band fan. Peterson and Taucher met at DeLille Cellars, where Peterson rose to winemaker and Taucher volunteered during the 2009 harvest.  Despite their diverging musical tastes, Peterson and Taucher struck a chord and have gone into business together. Taucher founded Woodinville-based Avennia Winery in 2010. Peterson consulted during the 2010 harvest before leaving DeLille in May 2011 to become the full-time winemaker at Avennia. They are currently selling their first wines (a Sauvignon Blanc, two Syrahs and two Bordeaux-style blends) to be released next fall and winter. Peterson and Taucher eventually agreed on Miles Davis to bridge their musical gap…

Agent: To Rent or Not to Rent

Joan Probala says rising rental costs and high demand here could cost you more in the long run.

Should you purchase? Are you thinking about renting? What is it going to take for you to make that big decision? Prices are low, interest rates are the lowest in history making this a great time to buy. If you plan on staying in a home for several years or using a property for long term investment, waiting for even a few months may increase the amount of money that a property will cost. Still considering renting? There are many reasons to rent, but rising rental costs could cost you more in the long run. Looking at statistics does not always indicate what the best decision is, but it is a place to start. According to Zillow, rents have increased 3 percent over the last year. That may not seem like such a large increase, but couple that …

Fork Dork: These Kings are Wild

Wild caught Copper River King Salmon is highly anticipated by consumers, driving the price of the fish, in some cases, upwards of $50 per pound.

Seafood consultant Jon Rowley is the king of Copper River King Salmon. It was Rowley who, in 1983, transformed how Copper River King Salmon was treated, raising it from frozen and canned salmon for export to a delicacy anticipated every spring like school children anticipate the end of the school year. “(In 1983) the quality was horrible,” Rowley said. Today, Rowley puts it simply, “Copper River King Salmon is the best fish in the world.” He refers to the fish as fat-bellied thoroughbreds. A fisherman by trade, Rowley consulted for Ray’s Boathouse, Restaurants Unlimited, McCormick & Schmick’s and Rosellini’s 410 during the Copper River King season in 1983. He devised an efficient process of bleeding and icing the fish before it reached …
