Two Seattle Area Schools Receive Fitness Grants from SUBWAY® restaurants

Seattle-Tacoma, WA [October 19, 2012] – SUBWAY® restaurants announced today the grand-prize winners in the SUBWAY FRESH FIT® “Get Fit Like the Seahawks” Video and Poster Competition. The two grand prize winners, Emily, 3rd grade, Lakeland Hills Elementary (Auburn, WA) and Elizabeth, 4th grade, Lawton Elementary (Seattle, WA), each received an awards package including an autographed Seahawks football, tickets to the November 4 Seahawks game vs. Vikings, $500 in SUBWAY® Cards, and a $1,000 fitness grant for their school to purchase new equipment and education resources.

Runners up in the contest, each receiving a $100 SUBWAY® Card and tickets to the November 4 Seahawks game vs. Vikings, are: Killian, 2nd grade, Martin Sortun Elementary (Kent, WA); Ivy, 1st grade, James Sales Elementary (Parkland, WA); and Zac, 3rd grade, Frantz Coe Elementary (Seattle, WA).

“It was great to reward the students for their initiative, creativity and active lifestyle,” said Seahawks president Peter McLoughlin.  “These students are committed to staying healthy and fit and have set a great example for their friends and families.”

SUBWAY® restaurants partnered with the Seattle Seahawks to promote health and fitness in the community through the video and poster contest. Since athletes have to work hard to maintain their physical condition, local public, private, and homeschooled students ages 5 to 14 were asked to show how they “Get Fit Like the Seahawks,” by either drawing on a poster board or recording a video.

Obesity rates in Washington have almost doubled in the past 15 years according to a study released by Trust for America’s Health. The study reveals that 11.1 percent of children and adolescents in Washington are considered obese. Obesity in children is generally caused by a lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns or a combination of both.

No purchase was necessary to participate. The contest was administered by The Summit Group.

We too, love having our Farmers' Market return! Opening day was a bit weather-challenged. ThankRead More you merchants for enduring the wet and cold for our new extended hours! What a wonderful sight will return to the plaza when the sunshine calls back all the families with happy, giggling children. Market day is a date of dinner out (side) & shopping (vegetables, fruits and now HedgeHog Toffee) with my husband. Doesn't get much better than that! SEE YOUR THERE! Susan Gerend
