Community Snapshots: Family Fun with FISH

The Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery hosted an open house on Earth Day to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the hatchery.

The mood was festive and the weather very cooperative Sunday, April 22, as dozens of volunteers and community members gathered at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery to celebrate its 75th year.

The day started off with some good news for the hatchery, which is set to receive $4 million in funding designated by the Washington state Legislature last week to improve its intake passage structure.

The hatchery, which has only two paid staff members, is run almost entirely by volunteers with the , who do everything from caring for the grounds to feeding, spawning, and releasing millions of fingerlings annually. They give tours to about 10,000 school children each year and offer a host of educational opportunities throughout the year.

The volunteers were out in force Sunday as well, running a scavenger hunt, showing kids the inner workings of salmon, and helping kids get the hang of fish printing with an actual fish.

FISH is always looking for more volunteers, said Jolene Sanborn.
