Play Date! Great Family Events and Deals in the Sammamish Area

Here are fun activities and some sweet deals for the whole family this upcoming week.

EVENTS FOR FAMILIES, July 27 – Aug. 3

July 27: Make a Windmill at the

  • 4 to 8 p.m.
  • It is artist and crafter week at the Sammamish Farmers Market and the activity for kids is making your own windmill. Visit with representatives from the Sammamish Community Wildlife Habitat Project and Washington Native Plant Society and find out how you can make your yard more diverse with native and sustainable plant life and inviting to wildlife.
  • Cost: Free

July 28: Summer Concerts in the Park featuring a Funk and Groove concert by DoctorfunK at

  • 6:30 to 8 p.m.
  • Enjoy a family-friendly concert. Sammamish and will be selling food, including ice cream and burgers, to benefit local projects that support youth and the community. 
  • Cost: Free

July 29 – 31: Ananda Mela Joyful Festival of India at the Campus

  • July 29: 7 to 9 p.m.
  • July 30 and 31: Noon to 9 p.m.
  • A celebration of India, featuring delicious food, free live music and dance performances, activities for kids, vendors, magicians, visual art displays and community organizer booths. Co-sponsored by the and Sammamish’s with grants from 4culture.org and Paint the Town.
  • Cost: Free

 July 29: Tales from a Small Planet at the

  • 3 p.m.
  • Kids ages two years old and up with caregivers will enjoy a live performance by band The Harmonica Pocket. Overhead and underfoot, hidden and in plain sight, hundreds of stories from Planet Earth are waiting to be told. Sponsored by the Friends of the Sammamish Library.
  • Cost: Free but come early as seating may be limited

 July 29 to 31: Kidsfair at the

  • Friday and Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Kids ages three- to 12-years-old will enjoy lots of fun, free art activities inside the museum including painting with pastels, making colorful creations with beads and creating a spinning mini movie using your own drawings. This is a great opportunity to escape from the heat and crowds of the fair and kids love all the hands on art activities. Plus admission to all the great exhibits at the museum are free the entire weekend.
  • And while you are at the fair, visit and interact with the installation by Sammamish fiber Artist , Experience Web: An Open Book.
  • Cost: Free

We too, love having our Farmers' Market return! Opening day was a bit weather-challenged. ThankRead More you merchants for enduring the wet and cold for our new extended hours! What a wonderful sight will return to the plaza when the sunshine calls back all the families with happy, giggling children. Washington already has a relatively regressive tax structure. The "choke the government" solution seems carried way too far.

I thank the author for his well thought out arguments regarding these important transportationRead More issues in Washington state. While I believe some of the ideas presented are debatable, for example I believe that a vital and well used transit system ought to be part of our congestion relief plan in metropolitan areas, the lack of realistic funding options for this system cannot be ignored. However, our legislature (both parties included) seems to place a higher priority on "no new taxes" than creating a sustainable future for the state in many areas, including the transportation system. More than that, though, we live in a state whose citizens have varied interests and priorities. Most of all, we need our government to set priorities so that citizen interests and needs can be reasonably served. It seems we are pretending that we can base tax policies and tax rates exclusively on individual self-interest, as is often the consequence "no new taxes" scheme (e.g. if I don't get a direct benefit for myself, I won't support paying for it). This seems to me to be as much a part of this problem as current transportation system priorities.

They are considering options that would charge commuters to use a new lane on I-405 & charge for the existing carpool lane too (even if you have two people in the car!)
