Residents Want Pit Bull Gone After Poodle Killed in Issaquah Highlands

A pit bull reportedly attacked and killed a poodle in the West Highlands Park neighborhood of Issaquah, prompting residents to start a petition to remove the dog from the area.

Neighbors are pushing a local homeowners association in Issaquah Highlands to enforce the removal of a pit bull from the area after it killed another resident's dog Friday night.

A young boy was walking the pit bull on July 26 when it became startled by a poodle as the dogs came face-to-face, causing the larger pit bull to attack the poodle and bite it in the stomach in the West Highlands Park area near 4th Avenue and Denny Way, according to King 5 News.

The dog later died of its injuries.

The owner of the pit bull told the news station that he'd lived there for a long time and hadn't had many problems. He conceded that his pit bull was involved in a previous encounter when his pit bull attacked, but that was in reaction to the other dog, which was acting aggressively.

Residents reportedly started an online petition to push the Issaquah Highlands Community Association to remove the pit bull from the area. Ownership of pit bulls and related mixed breeds are banned in the Issaquah Highlands, according to the neighborhood's detailed Covenants, Conditions and Regulations (CC&R).

"No resident of IH shall own or possess a pit bull dog or any dog which has the appearance of that breed within the boundaries of Issaquah Highlands," state the homeowner rules in regards to pit bull ownership.

Issaquah Police referred the matter to King County Animal Control, which is expected to address the issue today, July 29.
