Three Snohomish County Women Die of Flu

Six deaths now have been reported in Washington state this flu season.

Three Snohomish County residents, including a woman in her 40s, died in recent days from the severe flu that is going around, county health officials said Monday, bringing the total deaths reported in the state this flu season to six.

The Edmonds woman, a Bothell woman in her 40s and an Everett woman in her 80s died in late December in Snohomish County hospitals. All had underlying medical conditions, the department said in a statement.

As of Jan. 2, a surveillance report from two area hospitals shows 52 people have been hospitalized with flu symptoms since Nov. 1 in Snohomish County. Last year at this time there were four hospitalizations, and the year before there were none reported.

“We may be facing the most severe flu season since 2009,” said Dr. Gary Goldbaum, health officer for the Snohomish Health District, in a statement Monday. “I urge everyone over 6 months of age to get an annual flu shot. It’s still the best weapon we have to fight the flu strains that are circulating this year. Wash your hands often, stay home if you are sick, and cover your cough!”

In late December, the state Department of Health reported three deaths related to the flu: a Pierce County boy and two elderly residents in King County.

Snohomish County is well supplied with flu vaccine in providers’ offices as well as community clinics, pharmacies, and the Snohomish Health District clinics.  Here’s a list of where you can get vaccines.

We too, love having our Farmers' Market return! Opening day was a bit weather-challenged. ThankRead More you merchants for enduring the wet and cold for our new extended hours! What a wonderful sight will return to the plaza when the sunshine calls back all the families with happy, giggling children. Market day is a date of dinner out (side) & shopping (vegetables, fruits and now HedgeHog Toffee) with my husband. Doesn't get much better than that! SEE YOUR THERE! Susan Gerend
