VFW Post #3436 Honors Veterans

The annual ceremony drew a crowd despite looming rainclouds, and was the last public ceremony for Issaquah High School's Naval ROTC program.

A solemn occasion today, Monday, May 28, also marked an end of an era, of sorts, as the Issaquah High School Naval ROTC performed its last ceremony. VFW Post #3436's Dave Waggoner told the crowd at the start of the annual Memorial Day remembrance that the group will be disbanding this Wednesday.

The Issaquah High School Naval ROTC no longer has the 100 students required to maintain funding from the US Navy, Waggoner said.

"If you see a tear in my eye, that's allergies," Waggoner quipped.

The students did the ceremony proud, along with Boy Scout Troop 709 and Cub Scout Pack 639, and dozens of local veterans.

Issaquah School Board President Chad Magendanz, also a veteran, gave a guest address to the crowd, which came out in force despite threatening cloud cover that gave way to rain just before he began his remarks.

There are 464 Veterans buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Issaquah, including five who were killed in action, Waggoner told the crowd.

Flintoft’s Funeral Home & Crematory provided chairs and refreshments for the ceremony, and a lot of those in attendence brought their children and families.
