America the Beautiful: 19th Century Landscape Painting

This summer the Seattle Art Museum will be presenting Beauty and Bounty: American Art in the Age of Exploration.  In relation to the exhibit, Susan Olds offers a new lecture America the Beautiful: 19th Century Landscape Painting featuring the artists who introduced images of the American wilderness.  Many artists were commissioned by the government to record the grand vistas of the American continent, from the Adirondacks to the Pacific Northwest.  Artists to be included in the slide lecture:  Alfred Bierstadt, Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, George Catlin, Asher Durand, George Caleb Bingham, Frederick Remington, and Charles Russell, to name a few.
