Patch Picks: Shopping for School Supplies in Sammamish

What to buy and where to go for deals at stores on the Sammamish Plateau.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year—does anyone remember when Staples ran that back to school commercial with the father dancing down the aisles, tossing school supplies into the shopping cart while his two children glumly followed behind him? On Tuesday, Issaquah School District classes start. Lake Washington School District campuses open to students on Sept. 6.

Not sure what exactly to purchase for your child's first day? The  has published a PDF file of each school's list here (Just click on your school to access its individual website and find the list). For the , parents should contact their schools for information. But there are a few supply lists for specific grades, just to give you an idea, from the previous academic year online.

So now that you know what to buy, the next question is where to go for the best deals. Sammamish has options right here in town. Here are a few of our suggestions, based on visits earlier this week by Sammamish Patch to the stores. Keep in mind that prices and details can change.

  • : You'll need the grocery store's discount card. But you can get 10 pencils for $1, a savings of 29 cents from the regular price. The discount is good through Sept. 29, according to the tagged price. Until Tuesday, for those who have the discount card, the store is selling Bic pens, blue or black, for 79 cents for a pack of 10. That is a savings of $1.50 from the regular price.
  • : Until Saturday, the deal on certain binders is that you buy one and get a second one at 50 percent off. That also applies to some pens. The store also has back-to-school deals on glue sticks, tape, crayons and markers.
  • : The hardware store has coupons, which you can get in the store, for a pack of 10 pens for only $1. Sticky memo pads also are selling for $1 per pack. Both deals are good until Wednesday.
  • : A 10-pack of Papermate pens is selling for 99 cents through Sunday, down from the regular price of $2.69. Highlighters are selling for two for $1. The normal price is 99 cents for one. The prices for these items end on Sunday.
  • : Bic pens are discounted, as well, until Saturday. You can get a pack of 10 for 99 cents, with a store discount card. The regular price is $2.19. Crayola Crayons, in a pack of 64, can be purchased for $3.59 with a discount card. Regularly, they sell for $3.99. The price is good through Sept. 17.

Of course, there are more items at these stores for students returning to school in the coming weeks.

Editor's note: This type of post is being done as a special back-to-school note for parents and young people in Sammamish.

We too, love having our Farmers' Market return! Opening day was a bit weather-challenged. ThankRead More you merchants for enduring the wet and cold for our new extended hours! What a wonderful sight will return to the plaza when the sunshine calls back all the families with happy, giggling children. Market day is a date of dinner out (side) & shopping (vegetables, fruits and now HedgeHog Toffee) with my husband. Doesn't get much better than that! SEE YOUR THERE! Susan Gerend

Agreed Mark, Much as this solution seems crazy, some things are worth paying for (law and order, aRead More decent safety net, good schools and yes roads). I do blame the tax hawks though. Washington already has a relatively regressive tax structure. The "choke the government" solution seems carried way too far.

I thank the author for his well thought out arguments regarding these important transportationRead More issues in Washington state. While I believe some of the ideas presented are debatable, for example I believe that a vital and well used transit system ought to be part of our congestion relief plan in metropolitan areas, the lack of realistic funding options for this system cannot be ignored. However, our legislature (both parties included) seems to place a higher priority on "no new taxes" than creating a sustainable future for the state in many areas, including the transportation system. More than that, though, we live in a state whose citizens have varied interests and priorities. Most of all, we need our government to set priorities so that citizen interests and needs can be reasonably served. It seems we are pretending that we can base tax policies and tax rates exclusively on individual self-interest, as is often the consequence "no new taxes" scheme (e.g. if I don't get a direct benefit for myself, I won't support paying for it). This seems to me to be as much a part of this problem as current transportation system priorities.

It gets worse folks. I was part of a selected focus group a few weeks ago of people who live alongRead More I-405 conducted by a well-known marketing research firm and paid for by WSDOT. They are considering options that would charge commuters to use a new lane on I-405 & charge for the existing carpool lane too (even if you have two people in the car!)
