Petosa's Closing: Edmonds to Lose Its Only Downtown Supermarket

The store, a fixture since 1986, has failed to attract a buyer. It suffered extensive damage in April after a faulty sprinkler flooded it.

Petosa's Family Grocers, an institution in downtown Edmonds for more than 25 years, is scheduled to close in two months, Edmonds Patch has confirmed.

Petosa's is also home to the city's only Department of Licensing office.

The store has been for sale for some time, and has not attracted any potential buyers. The closure date is Feb. 28.

Tom and Betty Jo Petosa founded the grocery store at 550 Fifth Ave. S. in 1986. It was the the couple's second grocery market, as they had previously opened one at North 145th Street and Greenwood Avenue North. That store is no longer open.

Tom Petosa died in August 2005.

In April 2012, Petosa's suffered extensive damage after a faulty sprinkler flooded the business. The community rallied behind the store with a and the store opened again on April 15.

In an April 24th letter thanking Edmonds residents for their support of the store, Mayor Dave Earling noted Petosa's importance to the community: "Think how our downtown would feel if a disaster such as the one that hit Petosa's permanently put it out of business? Think about how we rely on a single type of business in the core ..."

Edmonds Patch will soon have more information on the closing of Petosa's.

Petosa's shoppers: Where will you go when the market closes?

Yes, I think the citizens of this unique town are capable of finding a buyer or coming up with the $$$ to float something here for this small grocer. ........Seems like one more empty, "for lease" storefront in Edmonds certainly announces that this is a town with important SMALL business not being supported.......Condos on the waterfront and business there (that takes away business from Main Street) that lines the pockets of a select few does not seem to be for the benefit of the citizens of this town. ......and I guess I'm wondering about THE HOTEL GROUP big sign on Fifth now....................website making reference to a "meet the money conference"......just saying, guess I'm wondering........that sign is gigantic....can't be missed......just wondering?? I certainly miss that half of the hardware store we had.

Rumor has it that a Trader Joe's is opening in the former Petosa's. Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks very much for your question. We're looking into what will come next at Petosa's.

Edmonds would be a perfect location for Trader Joe's "profile" (to pick their next locales, Trader Joe's looks at demographics such as education and median salary levels), but I would be surprised if they put one so close to their store on 196th.

The 196th Trader Joe's is nice but parking is very difficult. Perhaps parking would be much better at Petosa's location and more shoppers would go there.
