Return of the Librarian: Wherever You Go by Heather Davis

Holly grieves for her boyfriend, Rob, who died in a car accident.  She has no idea that he’s a ghost, who can’t seem to move on to whatever’s next, but watches over her, frustrated at his inability to affect the living.  The only person he can communicate with is Holly’s grandfather, who suffers from Alzheimer’s.  Holly has her hands full looking after both her little sister and her grandfather, since her mother works two jobs to support the household.  Jason, Rob’s best friend, has always admired Holly, but couldn’t speak up, of course.  He wants to help her.  There are many types of love, and many kinds of loss.  This story is about both.  It’s told from the viewpoints of Holly, Jason, and Rob, all of whom have seen that life’s road has more than its share of potholes and “not a through street” signs.  Holly’s grandfather can feel the sand slipping from beneath his feet, eroding his memories.  But even though there’s plenty to be sad about, there are still bright, colorful moments scattered among the gray like Swarovski crystals piled in a store bin, sparkling in spotlights.  Makes you want to grab handfuls, and let them sift through your fingers in shining trickles.  Life, however, tends to dole them out less generously.  It’s not easy being a teenager.  Or an Alzheimer’s sufferer.  Or a single mom with two kids.  Or a ghost.
