Eastside Catholic Advances, Issaquah Falls in State Lacrosse Tournament

Eastside Catholic defeated King's Way, 14-10 to reach the state quarterfinals while Issaquah fell, 6-5 to Mercer Island.

Eastside Catholic 14, King's Way 10

Colin MacIlvennie scored four goals and added three assists as Eastside Catholic advanced to the semifinals of the Washington Lacrosse Boys State Tournament with a 14-10 quarterfinal defeat of King’s Way, Thursday at the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish.  

 With the win, Eastside Catholic advanced to their second berth in state semifinals in as many years as the Crusaders will face Bellevue on Wednesday with the winner advancing to the Division I state championship game, Saturday, June 1 at Seattle’s Memorial Stadium.  

With King’s Way taking a 4-3 lead in the first, Eastside Catholic faced an uphill battle to stay in contention.  

But in the second, the Crusaders took charge out scoring the Knights 4-2 for a narrow 7-6 half-time advantage before pulling away with five third-quarter goals to make it 12-8 going into the final quarter. In the end, both squads settled for two goal each to round-out the game.  

With four goals and three assists, the Crusaders’ McIlvennie led all scorers with seven points, while Blake Lee and Jarrett Toy each had three goals and an assist for four points.  

Conner Dyehouse had three goals, while Brian Prigmore and Evan Ramirez each had two for King’s Way.  

Eastside Catholic (13-2-0) advanced to the semifinals of the Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championship Tournament to face Bellevue (19-2-0), Wednesday, May 29 in a 7 p.m. matchup at Bellevue High School.

Mercer Island 6, Issaquah 5 

Steen Swedstedt scored the go-ahead goal with just 2:09 remaining to lead Mercer Island into the semifinals of the Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championship Tournament with a 6-5 quarterfinal win over Issaquah, Thursday at Issaquah High School.  

Swedstedt finished the night with three goals as the Islanders move on to Wednesday’s state semifinal matchup with Bainbridge.  

Grant Priesler opened scoring on a feed from Peter Mahony to make it 1-0 Islanders before Swedstedt added his first of the night as the Islanders closed out the first with a 2-0 lead. 

After the two matched single goals in the second making it 3-1 at the half, Issaquah came charging back. In the third, Issaquah scored first to make it 3-2 before Swedstedt added his second for a 4-2 Islander lead. But that would be all for the Islanders in the third as the Eagles came soaring back with two more to knot the game at 4-4 going into the final quarter.  

In the fourth, MI’s Hayden Reisman struck first to make it 5-4. Issaquah then scored to knot the game at 5-5 before Swedstedt completed his hat trick to put the Islanders in the driver’s seat for good.   Islanders’ goaltender Benji Rothenberg had nine saves.  

For Issaquah, Matt Thomas led the way with two goals and Mikey Giannopulos had an assist and eight ground balls.  Eagles goaltender Brady Hahn finished the night with 10 saves.

Mercer Island (19-3-0) advanced to the semifinals of the Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championship Tournament, Wednesday, May 29 to face Bainbridge (14-8-0) in a 7 p.m. start at Mercer Island High School.  

Issaquah finished its season 14-7-0.
