Week in Review: Sammamish News and Information

Here's an at-a-glance look at events in Sammamish from the past week.

Another week has passed in Sammamish - but at least this one came with the warm weather associated with summer.

We know many people might be on vacation. Or others are gearing up for the start of school, which happens in weeks. Still, others are just outside, going for hikes, swimming in the lakes and enjoying the time before, well, the cold weather returns.

In that light, here's a quick look back at Sammamish news:

Monday: On the public recognition front, Money Magazine reported that the city of Sammamish is one of the top small towns in the country for people to live. The Boys & Girls Clubs of King County shared its good news: That it had received a $100,000 pledge to support the opening of its new Teen Center in Sammamish.

Patch.com announced its new "Dispatches" series, which aims to look at The American Dream - and how it is changing - in Sammamish and other towns in the country.

The King County Council emerged with an agreement to help Metro but included a $20 car tab fee. Councilwoman Kathy Lambert, who represents Sammamish, talked about her support in an opinion piece, which Sammamish Patch published.

Tuesday: It was primary day and Ramiro Valderrama and Jim Wasnick, candidates for the Sammamish City Council Position No. 4, were leading the three-person race.

Sammamish counselor Belinda Lafferty wrote an article about adult children who are moving back in with their parents because of the poor job prospects and sluggish economy.

Sammamish Patch also had a profile of GreenDisk, a company based in the city, which helps customers safely get rid of "technotrash" - all that unwanted data on CDs and the like.

Wednesday: In the weekly parenting column, there was some solid advice from a Sammamish dentist on how to help your kids maintain healthy teeth - and just in time for school, too.

The U.S. government announced it had given two Seattle-area community banks $27.9 million to help with small business loans. Sammamish Patch printed the information because small businesses in Sammamish might be interested.

Thursday: In the files, there were cases of thefts- passsports, IDs, a video game and wine were all swiped. The reported that ACT scores had gone up among its students.

About 200 people gathered in front of U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert's office on Mercer Island to call for more jobs. Reichert represents Sammamish in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Friday: Among the quick news items was a note that would be opening two new clinics in Redmond. This gives Sammamish more choices, especially with the new .

Also, national media reported that Bank of America would slash 3,500 jobs this quarter. A spokesperson for Bank of America has not responded to a Sammamish Patch query about how that might - or might not - affect the two branches in the city.

In police news, a Sammamish woman, who was cited for DUI, asked a King County Sheriff deputy why she was being questioned when there were actual bad guys that needed be found.

Saturday: Heidi Dietrich, Edmonds Patch editor, wrote about a new trend - gluten-free bakeries.

Sunday: Sammamish residents who like and winery should take note that there are upcoming events at these Woodinville-based businesses.

Sammamish Patch posted a photo gallery and short story about the Beaver Lake Triathlon, which was held on Saturday. Hundreds came out to the Sammamish lake to participate or cheer for loved ones.
