West Lake Sammamish Parkway Detour to Start March 19

A project that will add a trail along the west side of West Lake Sammamish Parkway means there will be road detours on southbound West Lake Sammamish Parkway at Southeast 34th Street.

Residents who use West Lake Sammamish Parkway will see a 24-hour southbound detour through October, beginning March 19, according to the city of Bellevue.

One mile of southbound West Lake Sammamish will be closed, and motorists will be routed on a 4-mile detour that includes Interstate 90.

Residents, students and people who need to go to the their homes, businesses, the French Immersion School of Washington or the Vasa Park Resort and Ballroom must access these places by heading north on West Lake Sammamish.

The construction is the first of five anticipated segments, each about one mile long. Plans call for widening the shoulder on the east side of the road, and a paved, wide multi-use path on the west side, separated from vehicle traffic by a landscaped buffer, according to the city.

The city of Bellevue describes the detour as follows:

The detour, which will be in effect 24 hours a day for approximately seven months, will route southbound motorists onto Southeast 34th Street and take them to the Eastgate area where they can access Southeast Newport Way, Southeast Eastgate Way and ramps to Interstate 90. Travel will be limited to one lane in the northbound direction, between 179th Avenue Northeast and Southeast 34th Street. Pedestrians and bicyclists will still have access in both directions.

According to the city, standard work hours for the project will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, though unforeseen circumstances may require the contractor to sometimes extend work hours in the afternoon to secure the area and insure public safety.
