Get to Know the Parkwood Community

"Get to Know Your Community" by Ken Urman

This post is the sixth in a series offering insights into the unique characteristics of specific neighborhoods on Mercer Island and communities surrounding Lake Washington, including Parkwood, Tarywood, Woodridge, Judkins Park and Newcastle.

Parkwood Estates (Parkwood) is one of the oldest planned neighborhoods of Mercer Island. It consists of 52 homes on 53 lots positioned on five separate blocks in the south central part of the island. The streets are 91st Avenue SE, Parkwood Lane, SE 54th Street, SE 55th Place, and SE 56th Street. The lots are mostly flat and home styles tend to be traditional, with circular driveways. Formal entry to Parkwood Estates is at SE 54th Street and Island Crest Way. With an ideal mid island location and beautiful streets and homes, Parkwood is a very sought after neighborhood.

Parkwood borders Island Park Elementary School and a park to the west, by other neighborhoods to the south, and by a city-owned greenbelt and ravine to the north and east. The neighborhood is near Pioneer Park, Deane’s Children’s Park, and Island Crest Park. Families with younger children often gravitate to this neighborhood.

Very close to Parkwood is a three-acre natural green space known as Parkwood Ridge. It is maintained by Mercer Island Parks and Recreation and includes trails down to East Mercer Way.

The Mercer Firs community is adjacent to Parkwood Estates, and often considered part of Parkwood. As with Parkwood, Mercer Furs is accessed via SE 54th from Island Crest.

The distinctive aspects of  Parkwood include underground utilities, paved gutters, lantern lights in front of most homes, signed entrances on the western and southern sides, and a laurel hedge marking the western and southern boundaries of the community.

The Parkwood Club, Inc., which manages the community and acts on behalf of the neighborhood in its relationship with the City of Mercer Island, in its responsibilities for maintenance of the common areas, and to ensure compliance with the community’s protective covenants.

The Real Estate brokerage Ewing and Clark East recently listed and sold a lovely three-bedroom rambler with a pool in Parkwood that sold for $720,000. Currently, one home is for sale in Parkwood Estates. If you have any questions about Parkwood, please contact me at 206-230-0833.
