Sugar Hunt, I mean Easter Egg Hunts

Sugar is out in droves this Easter. Can you avoid most of it?

If you have children you are probably stocking up right now on Peeps (why do I capitalize that name?) and jelly beans in the flavors of starburst, reece's pieces, sour patch and maybe even Bertie Bott's barf and snot flavors.

Easter is upon us and although I totally dropped the ball this year and didn't even get out the four tubs of decorations and the bunny village that usually goes on the hall table, I made a quick run to Bartell's today to get some sugar, I mean lovely Easter treats. When did Easter mean 10 pounds of candy? I guess I missed the memo but as a child I remember a modest egg hunt where you might be lucky to get 5 treats, and even then, you had to wait until after dinner to dig in. Coming from Canada, we'd each get a Laura Secord enormous egg that is chocolate on the outside, white creamy second layer and a bright yellow inside. But even then, we carved that thing like a Thanksgiving turkey and made the baseball-sized confection last all week. A tiny bit here, a bigger chunk there, then wait for a day and another slice for good behavior. We never got baskets brimming with eggs, chocolates, peeps, and bunnies with cute expressions on their faces just asking for their ears to be chomped off. Or stuffed animals and toys! Don't give in my friends. Don't turn EAster into another Christmas where we do way too much and get so stressed out over what is expected of us that we ruin it.

As we go into Easter weekend, don't forget moderation is golden, brush your teeth more than usual and expect some highs and lows after sugar consumption. Maybe this year can be the time we start tapering off a bit and just enjoy the comraderie of family and friends. And Sunshine!
