Eastside Fire & Rescue Battled Large Garage Fire on Friday Night

Fire on 218th Place Southeast caused $180,000 in damages.

The following information is from a press release issued by Eastside Fire & Rescue:

Firefighters with Eastside Fire & Rescue were called to a structure fire at approximately 5:51 p.m. on Friday, November 4. The large detached two-story garage burning was located at the 200 block of 218th Place SE in the City of Sammamish. The homeowner called 911 to report the fire, saying he left the wood burning stove turned down prior to leaving on some errands. When he returned, the garage was fully engulfed in flames.

When firefighters arrived on scene, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the 2000 square foot two-story garage, creating a large thermal column that could be seen from several neighborhoods. Firefighters worked to quickly extinguish the fire and protect the home that was approximately 50 feet from the burning garage.

The King County Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene of the fire. The fire remains under investigation with damages at $100,000 for the structure and $80,000 for the content. No injuries were reported on this fire.

SAFETY MESSAGE: Many people use fireplaces, wood stoves and other fuel-fired appliances as primary heat sources in their homes. Heating fires account for 36 percent of residential home fires every year. Often these fires are due to creosote buildup in chimneys and stovepipes or caused by unattended wood burning stoves and fireplaces. Home heating systems require regular maintenance to function safely and efficiently.
