Freezing Conditions Create Road Hazards
Eastside Fire & Rescue offers some cautionary tips to navigate icy roads
Reports this week from fire crews agency-wide indicate that the freezing weather conditions have created a challenge for many motorists. Road conditions are icy and slick in several areas on the eastside. Firefighters throughout Eastside Fire & Rescue’s service area have responded to several car crashes, motorists spinning out, or cars in ditches. Monday morning a Washington State Patrol officer was involved in a due to icy early morning conditions on Interstate 90.
Knowing how to navigate and maneuver your car in inclement weather conditions, such as snow and ice, can help you avoid a dangerous ride. Driving safely by slowing down under these conditions is essential to keeping you safe behind the wheel. Following a few tips can help you maneuver through these conditions safely:
- If cars behind you are tailgating during bad weather conditions, pull over and let them pass.
- Having a front-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle is not a guarantee that it will handle icy roads.
- Avoid using cruise control if driving on icy roads.
- Stay alert, and refrain from talking on your cell phone while driving even if you have a hands-free device.
- Slow your speed down and allow yourself distance between you and the car in front of you.
- Always wear your seatbelt.
- Most of all, if you don’t have to be out in the elements, stay home.
