Issaquah Police Urges Residents to Toddler-Proof Homes

Issaquah Police are reminding local parents to child-proof their homes after a 3-year-old girl went missing from her Issaquah Highlands home at about 11:30 a.m. April 3, 2013.

Two good Samaritans, including an on-duty Comcast employee, found the girl several blocks from her home. They noticed that the girl was alone and not wearing proper clothing for the weather. The two adults stayed with the child, wrapped her in a sweatshirt and called 911.

Shortly after, the child’s mother – who was clearly upset – arrived. She said her daughter had left their home, without her knowledge, after unlocking the deadbolt of the front door.

This is a good reminder for parents to take the following safety precautions at home:

• Adult supervision is the best form of toddler-proofing your home.
• Childproof your exterior doors.
• Be aware that children may be able to open or remove screen doors and windows, which creates falling hazards or enables them to escape.
• Remember that your toddler’s capabilities can change daily – just because your child can’t do something today, doesn’t mean he or she can’t do it tomorrow.
• Be extra careful in other people’s homes that may not be toddler-proofed.
