The victim, who died instantly, was a male whose name and age have not been released by police. He was struck by a passenger car driven by an unidentified 26-year-old. Investigators do not believe the driver committed any traffic infractions or was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to a news release from the .

The collision happened about 600 feet east of 180th Avenue Northeast. An off-duty police officer who was getting gas at a nearby witnessed a car traveling westbound on Redmond Way brake hard to attempt to avoid a person who was standing or walking across the road "in lanes clearly marked for vehicle traffic" and not near a cross-walk, the release stated.

Lt. Tim Gately of the Redmond Police Department said the closest crosswalk to the victim was at 180th Avenue Northeast.

“We believe he started at the Shell gas station," Gately said. "It looked like he was walking from the south side of the road to the north side of the roadway.”

The roadway varies between five and six lanes in that general vicinity, with at least two lanes of vehicle traffic in each direction and a center turn lane in most locations.

“It’s a wide road,” Gately said.

After the car struck the pedestrian, the officer used his cell phone to call for help and ran to try to assist the victim, who was lying in the roadway. The officer could not locate a pulse and determined first aid could not be administered due to the severity of the victim's injuries.

The driver has been fully cooperating with police, according to the news release.

All westbound lanes of Redmond Way were closed until approximately 3 a.m. Friday while police investigated the collision.

Redmond Patch will post more information as soon as it is available.
