Police Keep Eyes Open For Unsecured Premises

When Sammamish’s police deputies are on patrol they routinely come across garages that have been left open. The police call these “unsecured premises” and oftentimes they can result in thefts, car prowls and burglaries.

When police see an open garage door they stop, speak to the homeowner and warn them that leaving a garage open and unsecured is a recipe for trouble.

In a typical week police will report a few of these unsecured premises, and in a typical week there are usually a few car prowls or residential burglaries.

After several recent non-forced entry burglaries in the Trossachs area – ones in which the suspect most likely gained entrance to the home through an open or unsecured garage – Sammamish police decided to make a push to warn homeowners, resulting in 17 unsecured premises reports in recent weeks.

“The guys were out hitting that hard,” said Sammamish Police Administrative Sergeant Jessica Sullivan.

After police have warned residents not to leave their garages open there’s only so much they can do, though. Sergeant Sullivan advises people that they need to be pro-active about crime prevention, that they need to be aware and vigilant.

“That’s always a good thing,” Sergeant Sullivan said.
