Sammamish Police Blotter: Couple Arrested for DUI and Obstructing an Officer

The following information was supplied by the Sammamish Police Department for the week of Nov. 12 - 19. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A Sammamish man and his wife were arrested Nov. 14 after verbally sparring with police during a DUI stop. Police arrested the 40-year-old man for DUI, and his 36-year-old wife for obstruction after she argued with a deputy who was attempting to question her husband following a suspected DUI stop.

While on routine patrol the deputy spotted a vehicle driving at night without its headlights or taillights on. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver ignored the deputy’s siren and flashing lights. The vehicle eventually pulled into a driveway on Northeast 10th Place and the deputy pulled in behind it.

As the deputy attempted to approach the driver a woman walked by his patrol car and asked what he was doing. The deputy responded that he was attempting to question the driver of the vehicle. At this point, the driver of the vehicle, who appeared to be intoxicated, got out of his vehicle and told the deputy he was on private property. The woman told the deputy to leave and said that he couldn’t talk to her husband. The deputy told the woman to leave the scene or face arrest. She refused and was arrested for obstruction and transported to Issaquah Jail.

Following the altercation with the driver’s wife, the deputy attempted to contact the driver, who appeared intoxicated. The driver said that the deputy was on private property and refused to get out of his car. The deputy warned him that he would be pepper sprayed if he didn’t leave the vehicle. The driver said, “Go ahead.” The deputy pepper sprayed the driver, who fell then out of the car. The driver continued to resist arrest, though.

Eventually the deputy and his backup subdued the driver. They subsequently discovered that he had no license, and that his vehicle was supposed to be equipped with a breath interlock device but wasn’t. The driver later provided a Breathalyzer sample, blowing a .267. Given the high level of intoxication the driver was transported to Overlake Hospital for detoxification.
