Sammamish Police Blotter: Man Attempts to Escape From Police, is Threatened With Tazing

The following information was supplied by the Sammamish Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Tuesday, Oct. 4

Obstructing an Officer: Sammamish police arrested a 24-year-old Tacoma man after he allegedly tried to escape from police at Overlake Hospital following a traffic accident.

The man had been a passenger in a vehicle that was involved in a collision. While the man was being examined for injuries, dispatch notified police that he was wanted on several warrants, including possession of a stolen vehicle and residential burglary.

The man was taken to Overlake Hospital and a deputy followed. While there, the man asked if he was going to be jailed in Seattle. The deputy said yes, at King County Jail. The man said that his family was already on their way to the hospital. The deputy said that if the man agreed to remain cooperative he would be allowed to see his 3-year-old son before being transported to King County Jail. The man agreed.

The man was later escorted to the X-ray room where he would have to stand for X-rays. The deputy was not able to secure the man in handcuffs in that position because that would interfere with the X-ray procedure. Then, when the deputy was required to stand behind lead-plated glass, the man attempted to run away.

The deputy chased the man through the hospital, and once outside unholstered his Tazer and yelled, “Stop or I will taze you.” The man immediately dropped to the ground and spread out his arms. The deputy secured him without further incident.

The man said he was distraught and just wanted to see his son. He added that if he weren’t cuffed he would punch the deputy in the face.

The deputy informed the man that their deal was off and transported him to King County Jail.
