Woman Injured on 520 When Loose Wheel Hits Car

A Kirkland woman is in stable condition at Overlake Hospital after she was hit by a wheel that flew off a trailer headed in the other direction on 520.

A 43-year-old Kirkland woman was injured Tuesday morning when the vehicle she was driving westbound on state Route 520 near Bellevue was hit by a wheel that flew off a trailer being pulled in the other direction.

Anita M. Manueltiqui was taken to Overlake Hospital in Bellevue after the incident, which occurred at about 6:43 a.m. at milepost 5.1 on 520, between the 92nd Avenue NE and Bellevue Way exits.

A hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday afternoon that Manueltiqui was admitted in critical condition, but her condition was later upgraded to stable.

She had been driving a 202 Mazda, which was totalled after being hit by the wheel that came off a flatbed trailer, the Washington State Patrol reported.

The trailer was being pulled eastbound by a 2000 GMC truck driven by 39-year-old Joseph Gonzalez of Tacoma, who was not injured. Other than losing its wheel, the trailer was not damaged, the State Patrol reported.

The patrol said no drugs or alcohol were involved and that both drivers were wearing seatbelts. It cited defective equipment as the cause and said charges are pending.
