King County Council Recommends Senn for 41st District Seat

Senn, the preferred pick of local party Democrats, offered comments and answered questions at the Council of the Whole at a Sept. 4 meeting in Seattle.

The King County Council officially moved on Wednesday to appoint Tana Senn to represent the 41st District in the State House, moving the Mercer Island City Councilwoman forward in the process to replace former Rep. Marcie Maxwell (D-Renton).

Senn, the preferred pick of local party Democrats, offered comments and answered questions at the Council of the Whole at a Sept. 4 meeting in Seattle. Councilmember Rod Dembowski moved an amendment to formally place her name on the motion appointing her to the position of state representative for the 41st legislative district, which passed unanimously.

Senn was appointed to a vacant Mercer Island City Council seat in January 2012 after running a successful city council campaign for fellow Mercer Islander Debbie Bertlin in 2011.

A formal vote is scheduled for a second reading and recommended for approval in the council's consent agenda at a Monday, Sept. 9 King County Council meeting.

Former Rep. Marcie Maxwell resigned on July 15, 2013 to become Senior Education Policy Advisor in the Legislative Affairs and Policy Office of Governor Jay Inslee, leaving the seat open to appointment for the rest of the elected term through 2014.

The King County Democratic Central Committee selected Senn as their top pick at an Aug. 21. Eighty-five Democratic precinct committee officers (PCOs) held a series of three votes, with Senn ranked first, Mercer Island resident David Ellis second and Bellevue resident George Pieper II third.

The King County Council was authorized 60 days under state law to make the appointment, which was Sept. 13.
