Mock the Vote: Students in Sammamish and Issaquah Lean Blue in Mock Election

Local students who participated in Washington's mock election overwhelming chose socially progressive platforms and democratic candidates.

Sammamish and Issaquah students appear to lean blue, at least among engaged future voters.

Washington students voted no on decriminalizing marijuana, approved of gay marriage, supported Democrats Jay Inslee and President Barack Obama, and squeaked through public charter schools, in the statewide student mock election, run by the Washington Secretary of State.

The polls for the student mock election closed Friday after a week of student participating. This year, 38,848 students statewide took part in the event, now in its ninth year, according to the Secretary of State's blog. That's more than double the previous record number of student voters in 2008.

In Issaquah, of the 92 ballots cast, charter schools lost 64 percent to 35 percent, while same-sex marriage and decriminalizing marijuana won, as did Democrat candidates for president and governor by wide margins.

In Sammamish charter schools were a big winner, while the 567 participating students echoed Issaquah on the other issues and candidates. Following are the full results of the mock election:

We too, love having our Farmers' Market return! Opening day was a bit weather-challenged. ThankRead More you merchants for enduring the wet and cold for our new extended hours! What a wonderful sight will return to the plaza when the sunshine calls back all the families with happy, giggling children. Market day is a date of dinner out (side) & shopping (vegetables, fruits and now HedgeHog Toffee) with my husband. Doesn't get much better than that! SEE YOUR THERE! Susan Gerend
