Poll: Do You Support Gay Marriage?

Washington state will become the seventh state in the union to legalize same-sex marriage if Gov. Gregoire signs the legislation on Monday. Do you think this is something to celebrate or are you opposed?

Legislation that would legalize gay marriage in Washington State is expected to land on Gov. Chris Gregoire's desk on Monday.

In a 55-43 vote, the state house approved legislation Wednesday, Feb. 8, legalizing same sex marriage. Tha was a week after the legislation passed the senate in a 28-21 vote.

“This is truly a historic day in Washington state, and one where I couldn’t be more proud. With today’s vote, we tell the nation that Washington state will no longer deny our citizens the opportunity to marry the person they love. We tell every child of same-sex couples that their family is every bit as equal and important as all other families in our state. And we take a major step toward completing a long and important journey to end discrimination based on sexual orientation,” she posted on her website after Wednesday's vote.

Despite the governor's expected signature, the law is likely to come to the voters before it can be enacted. The Olympian newspaper in the state capital reported that the Family Policy Institute of Washington is organizing a campaign to put a law to a vote on the November ballot. The full story is on The Olympian's website.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco struck down 2-1 the California Proposition -- Prop. 8 -- that amended the state constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a woman. (Proposition 8 followed a court ruling that exlcuding gays from marriage was against California's state constitution.) That ruling is expected to head to the Supreme Court.

Bellevue's representation in Olympia all voted in favor of the legislation:

41st District

Sen. Steve Litzow (R- Mercer Island): Yes

Rep. Judy Clibborn (D - Mercer Island): Yes

Rep. Marcie Maxwell (D -Renton): Yes.

48th District

Sen. Rodney Tom (D- Medina): Yes

Rep. Ross Hunter (D- Bellevue): Yes

Rep. Deb Eddy (D- Kirkland): Yes

Do you think legal gay marriage in this state is something to celebrate? Or are the reasons to oppose it?

Apparently you have a strange God because our religion, G_d (it is disrespectuful to spell his/her name), supports gays, lesbians and transgenders. If G_d did not make them, then who did? Are you saying that G_d did not make any person who is not perfect in your eyes. Apparently you cannot accept people different from you. Beliefs like yours have caused prejudice and wars throughout the world. I believe Jesus said to accept all and he even had people close to him who were eunuchs. Read your Bible and study what you read without believeing like a sheep. It is your fears and ignorance that are leading you to hate. They used to try to fix people who believed the world was round or were left-handed. Now we know better. Hate is not part of the Bible. Learn and know that these caring people will not hurt you. I know, I have a relative who is the most wonderful person in the world and helps others all the time. I know this person has something from G_d, if there is a G_d. And, if your G_d does not think so, I really dislike YOUR G_d. Take care and may you become stronger to learn that you can accept these people and still be loved by the Almighty and nothing bad will happen!

Jesus himself redefined marriage. Before him, the norm was one man to *many* women. Not only that, you could divorce your wife if she was barren. Jesus is largely credited for introducing the idea that marriage is *not* primarily about the ability to sire children and that you should stick with your wife out of love, even if you cannot have children. So the idea that somehow marriage is primarily about the ability to procreate is actually a pre-Christian, Judaic teaching and not a Christian teaching at all. A lot of Christians really ought to study a bit about what Jesus actually taught!
