High School Tournaments Under Way

Here's the lowdown on who's playing where and when.

Baseball

Eastside Catholic upset both Mt. Vernon and Timberline on May 19 in 3A play to secure a spot in the final four, for the bid for the State Championship this weekend in Pasco Washington. Eastside Catholic Mom Rhonda Bunker said it was a "Pitcher" Perfect day for the Crusaders. Here are her game summaries:  

Game 1: Eastside Catholic over. Mt. Vernon 1-0

Pitcher, Junior, Alex Foley was on fire as he shut out Mt. Vernon giving up only 3 hits.  In the bottom of the 7th, Freshman, Addison Hull of EC hit the game winning RBI hitting in Alec Baer.  Four words describe this game....  "Holy Moly Alex Foley"

Game 2: Eastside Catholic over Timberline 5-1

Pitcher, Junior, Blake Gillespie gave up only one run to beat Timberline.  EC's bats were hot as well, Braden Wolgamott, 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's, 1 run scored,  Hayden Meier 3 for 3, with 2 RBI's, Travis Ulvestead 1 for 3  with 1 RBI,  Jeffrey Bohling 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base, and Jeff Kepple 1 for 2 with a walk and a stolen base, TJ Murphy, hit, Luke Shephard 1 for 3 with a walk.

First year Head Coach Kyle Larsen has coached these boys to fight, believe, and be their best!

The Crusaders take on take on Kelso  Friday, May 25 at Gesa Stadium in Pasco at 1 p.m. If they win, they’ll face either Kamiakin or Bishop Blanchet May 26 at 4 p.m.

Issaquah High School was knocked out of the tournament by Puyallup on May 19-3-1.

 

Golf

After Round 1 of the state Golf Tournament at Spokane golf courses, in 4A boys play, Eastlake’s Spencer Weiss was tied for second with a score of 75, while Brian Mogg from Skyline and Li Wang from Eastlake were in a multi-way tie for fourth with scores of 76. Taylor Swingle of Issaquah High finished round one with a score of 82, for 36th place. Round 2 continues today. 4A girls Mersadie Tallman of Issaquah, and Megan Wotherspoon, of Eastlake, finished round one in 12th and 25th, with scores of 79 and 84, respectively. Meanwhile, 3A boys golfer Kyle Hendrix of Eastside Catholic hung in there for 39th place after round one, with a score of 81, and 3A girls golfer McKenna Boit of EC finished the first round in 23rd with a score of 84.

Round two is well underway today.

Lacrosse

Eastside Catholic advanced to the semifinals of the Washington Lacrosse Boys Division 1 State Championship tournament with a Division I quarterfinal win over Lake Tapps, Friday at Pete’s Pool Stadium in Enumclaw. With the win, the Crusaders face King’s Way in today’s semifinal, after Issaquah suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 home loss to King’s Way on Saturday, May 19, which also broke Issaquah’s 24-game home field winning streak dating back to 2010. Eastside Catholic hosts King’s Way tonight, May 23, at 7 p.m. (information from Washington State Prep Lacrosse)


Tennis

State Tennis is Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26, in Richland and will include Theresa Huang, of Skyline, who faces Jelena Vidovic, Union, and Aman Manji, of Skyline, who plays Kent Andreasen, Skyview, in the first round May 25. In Boys 4A, Eastlake’s Vincente Veras, faces Dakota Giddings, of South Kitsap, in boys 4A tennis Friday, May 25.

In 4A girls doubles: Sam Garrard and Kelsey Wilson, from Issaquah High School face Manthou and Belmondo, of Kentwood, Friday May 25 in round one.

 

Soccer

Both Skyline and Issaquah boys soccer teams fell in early rounds of WIAA play. Skyline lost to Puyallup 2-1, while Issaquah was defeated by Kamiak 1-0.

 

Track & Field

There’s no shortage of track talent from Sammamish-Issaquah represented at the state meet that begins tomorrow, May 24 at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma.
