Schools throughout Sammamish, Redmond and Kirkland are seeking volunteers to help meet a growing need in all grade levels.

LINKS (Looking Into the Needs of Kids and Schools) is a program of the Lake Washington School District (LWSD), with funding provided by the Lake Washington Schools Foundation. The program connects community volunteers with needs in the schools. Current needs include Lunch Buddies, Classroom Helpers and Academic Mentors.

How can you help? There are several assignment to choose from. The Lunch Buddy programs match caring community members with an elementary age student to meet weekly during the students lunch hour. The buddies decide how to spend their time together. It’s a great way for adults to take a break in their busy day to make a difference in a child’s experience at school. Students have the opportunity to meet a new friend and have fun playing games, talking or doing other agreed upon activities during their lunch period.

Volunteers are also needed as Academic Mentors or Classroom Helpers. Academic Mentors generally tutor one student weekly to help them with a specific subject matter they need extra help with. Currently, most matches in this category are made at the middle school grade level. Classroom Helpers work with multiple students in math, reading, writing or other subject areas. Volunteers also help as tutors in after school study programs in several of our middle and high schools.

As a volunteer you will learn more about the challenges facing students today and will feel the reward when a student celebrates their successes.

Volunteering is a great way for groups of people to share their time and talent in our schools. Whether it is a work group, a neighbor across the street or a group of retirees wishing to give back, LINKS has a place for you.

LINKS offers a Volunteer Orientation for all new volunteers and will assure volunteers  are matched with an assignment they feel comfortable with. Volunteers receive a quarterly newsletter, have the option to attend volunteer trainings throughout the school year and will be invited to an end of year celebration.
