Whiz Kids: Adam Hawkins Wins Eastlake High School's Staff Scholarship

Adam Hawkins was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the staff at Eastlake High in recognition of his community service.

Name, age: Adam Hawkins, 18.

School and Neighborhood: Adam, who just from , lives in Sammamish. 

Accomplishments: Adam was the 2011 recipient of Eastlake High School’s Staff Scholarship, a $1,000 prize awarded to a deserving student of the staff’s choosing.

“It’s a pretty great honor,” Adam said about winning the scholarship.

Adam was touched that the Eastlake staff thought so highly of him and recognized in him the qualities he’s always appreciated in others and tried to strive for himself.

Eastlake staff chose Adam based on his many on- and off-campus community service activities, such as his involvement with Eastside Search and Rescue and .

The winner of the scholarship was announced during Eastlake’s recent graduation ceremony. David Hecht, a teacher at Eastlake, spoke highly of Adam in a speech he gave during the ceremony.

“He is a sweet guy, a low key leader who is invariably helpful and respectful of everybody, teachers and peers alike,” Hecht said in his speech.

Key to awesomeness: Adam is known for being incredibly active in a variety of community services and high school clubs. He is active with  and High Schools Against Cancer, has been a member of the Sammamish Youth Board and was in Eastlake’s Environmental Club.

He also was honored as a 2011 SAMMI nominee for “Teen Spirit.”

“I enjoy the feeling of giving back,” Adam said.

Adam likes working with other people to solve problems. He also enjoys helping to improve the organizations he’s been a part of and leaving them in better shape than we he first joined.

Adam is especially enthusiastic about his involvement with Eastside Search and Rescue. “It’s been an absolute blast,” Adam said.

Adam first joined Eastside Search and Rescue as a sophomore and is now a team leader. “It’s just a cool thing to do overall,” he said.

Adam enjoys hiking and other outdoor activities and recently climbed Mount Rainer.

He also has a bit of musical talent, performing both in Eastlake High School’s jazz band and with the Eastlake Drum Line.

Adam has been accepted to Western Washington University, where he will be studying Environmental Science. He has an interest in specializing in climatology or forestry. He plans to continue his involvement with outdoor search and rescue and various cancer-fighting charities.
