Sonics Arena: Imagining the possibilities

My thoughts about the benefits of a new basketball/hockey arena that will bring back the Sonics.

With the home stretch pending for the Seattle City Council to vote on the MOU between Chris Hansen and his investment team on the proposed SODO arena in the near Safeco and Century Link Field.

It leads me to think about the journey to this point and the possibilities moving forward.

First, thank you to Chris Hansen, for having the vision and determination to want to bring back a 41 year legacy that was the Supersonics to this area and also the northwest region in general.

While the professional teams in this area have the name Seattle, teams like the Seahawks, Mariners, and Sounders FC they transcend an entire northwest region. That to me is why this is so important. This is about investing in ourselves and reestablishing Seattle as a World-Class Sports City by bringing the NBA back, bringing the NHL down the road. Also, it sets the tone for bringing arguably the best sporting event on the planet the NCAA Basketball Tournament back to Seattle instead of Spokane, Boise, and Portland.

In addition, bringing the NBA back would only further galvanize the local media like SportsRadio KJR, you can tell by listening to the station that it has brought an extra energized focus from Mitch,Dick Fain, Softy, the Furness Show, and Gas and Elise in taking a leadership role in getting citizens to email local politicians in stating their views in support of the arena.

More importantly, building this arena just provides an opportunity for mothers and fathers to take their children and grand children etc to create new memories of going to games, and give kids more athletes to look up and be more active in sports at the youth level if they aren't doing so already.

Are the challenges with traffic, and the Port sure, should Chris Hansen be responsible for fixing all of it absolutely not? In the end, I just sincerely hope the Seattle City Council does the right thing and shows the commitment to uncompromised excellence by believing in the sports fans of the region.

Thank you Chris Hansen, Thank you KJR, and Thank you to everyone who has been writing council members , going to meetings, and trying to get the Sonics back for future generations like my nephews and my 16 month niece to enjoy for years and years to come. I am very thinking very positively this will get done because this is an incredible opportunity for this area to get the Sonics back.

Sincerely,

Scott Whittum

We too, love having our Farmers' Market return! Opening day was a bit weather-challenged. ThankRead More you merchants for enduring the wet and cold for our new extended hours! What a wonderful sight will return to the plaza when the sunshine calls back all the families with happy, giggling children. Market day is a date of dinner out (side) & shopping (vegetables, fruits and now HedgeHog Toffee) with my husband. Doesn't get much better than that! SEE YOUR THERE! Susan Gerend

Agreed Mark, Much as this solution seems crazy, some things are worth paying for (law and order, aRead More decent safety net, good schools and yes roads). I do blame the tax hawks though. Washington already has a relatively regressive tax structure. The "choke the government" solution seems carried way too far.

I thank the author for his well thought out arguments regarding these important transportationRead More issues in Washington state. While I believe some of the ideas presented are debatable, for example I believe that a vital and well used transit system ought to be part of our congestion relief plan in metropolitan areas, the lack of realistic funding options for this system cannot be ignored. However, our legislature (both parties included) seems to place a higher priority on "no new taxes" than creating a sustainable future for the state in many areas, including the transportation system. More than that, though, we live in a state whose citizens have varied interests and priorities. Most of all, we need our government to set priorities so that citizen interests and needs can be reasonably served. It seems we are pretending that we can base tax policies and tax rates exclusively on individual self-interest, as is often the consequence "no new taxes" scheme (e.g. if I don't get a direct benefit for myself, I won't support paying for it). This seems to me to be as much a part of this problem as current transportation system priorities.

It gets worse folks. I was part of a selected focus group a few weeks ago of people who live alongRead More I-405 conducted by a well-known marketing research firm and paid for by WSDOT. They are considering options that would charge commuters to use a new lane on I-405 & charge for the existing carpool lane too (even if you have two people in the car!)
