Mixed Oregon Weekend for Skyline Boys Lacrosse

Skyline (5-4-0) defeated Tualatin High on Friday but fell to winless Oregon Episcopal School in Portland on Saturday. Skyline's JV team also compiled and impressive 17-2 win this weekend over Union.

Ryan Benz led Skyline High School to a 15-9 boys high school lacrosse win on Friday over Tualatin High School, but couldn't put Oregon Episcopal away in a Saturday afternoon upset, 13-12.

In the first game of a two-game set against Oregon high schools, the Spartans put up four in the first and four in the second to power to an 8-3 half-time lead.

The Timberwolves posted a 3-2 third to make it 10-6, but coach Henry Valentine’s Spartans turned up the heat in the fourth with five goals to close-out the game.

Benz finished the night with nine points and two ground balls after posting two assists.  Michael Cowin also had a strong night for the Spartans, netting four goals and two assists.

Skyline goaltender Rob Hilde had five saves.

On Saturday, Oregon Episcopal School scored four goals in the fourth to overtake Skyline for a 13-12.

Behind five goals and four assists by Skyline’s Ryan Benz, the Spartans built a narrow 8-7 lead at the half and extended its advantage to 11-9 behind three third-quarter scores.

But the Aardvarks finally got their legs, holding the Spartans to a single goal in the fourth, while putting up four to close-out the game.

Oregon Episcopal was led by Trevor Johnson with four goals and Calvin Collins with three.

For Skyline, Tyler Johnson joined Benz among the scoring leaders with three goals and two assists, while goaltender Kyle Kuberski had two saves.

Skyline (4-5-0) next faces Tahoma (2-5-0), Monday, April 8 in a 7 p.m. start at Tahoma High School in Covington. 

Skyline's JV team, meanwhile, scored an impressive 17-2 victory at King’s Way Christian School in Vancouver over an upstart lacrosse program at Union High School on Friday.

Playing one of the deeper programs in boys high school lacrosse, Union gave-up nine first quarter goals before being blanked 4-0 in the second to quickly fall behind 13-1 at the half to a faster Spartan squad.

In the third, Skyline added another three before matching Union’s single fourth quarter goal. Gunnar Drell and Trey Chambers handled the scoring, while goaltender Peyton Summers recorded a busy 15 saves in goal for Union.

Union (2-4-0) next faces Issaquah JV, Wednesday April 10 in a 5 p.m. start at Pacific Middle School in Vancouver, Wash.
