Josiah Fonte scored a season-high eight goals to lead Eastlake into the quarterfinals of the Washington Lacrosse Boys State Tournament with a 19-10 first-round playoff defeat of Curtis, Tuesday at Eastlake High School in Sammamish.

Fonte’s eight-goal, two-assist performance more doubled the senior attackman’s previous highs of four goals achieved twice during the regular season.

Eastlake moved out to a 5-3 advantage in the first than poured on seven more in the second while holding Curtis to just a pair to take a 12-5 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Wolves again outscored the Vikings 4-3 in the third and 3-2 in the fourth to close-out the game and advance to the next round of the state tournament.

Eastlake also received top performances from brothers Austin and Davis Caldwell, who each had four goals.

Curtis was led by Ryder Choate and Beau Olson who each tallied three goals, while goaltender Zach Budnick had 10 saves between the Vikes’ pipes.

The win sets up a reunion of sorts in the state quarterfinals on Thursday, May 23 between Eastlake (10-6-0) and its first-year coach Chris O’Dougherty and defending state champion Bellevue (18-2-0) and their coach John Bauman, who O’Dougherty served under as an assistant coach.

The game gets underway at 7 p.m. at Bellevue High School. In their only other meeting this season, O’Dougherty’s Wolves dropped an 18-2 decision to Bellevue on April 2.

Curtis finishes its season with a 6-12-0 record.
