Boys Lacrosse: Skyline Falls to Oregon’s Sunset in Tournament

Skyline defeated Portland Jesuit earlier this weekend at the NW Invitational Boys High School Lacrosse Tournament on Mercer Island.

Ryan Benz’s hat trick wasn’t enough as Skyline High School boys lacrosse fell behind early and never caught up, dropping its Sunday NW Invitational game to Oregon’s Sunset High School 8-6 at Mercer Island High School.

The loss evened the Spartans’ record at 2-2-0 on the season.

After matching a pair of goals in the first, Skyline gave up three goals to Sunset in the secon to fall behind 5-3 at the half.

The Spartans began to work their way back in the third outscoring Sunset 2-1, but were outscored again in the fourth to close out the game.

Benz finished the day with three goals and an assist and Cannon Gardner had two goals to lead Skyline’s scoring.

Sunset was led by Locke Rohan with four goals.

In an earlier tournament game on Saturday, Skyline used two-goal performances by four different players to move-out to a nine goal lead over Portland Jesuit than hang-on for an 11-7 win.

The Spartans blanked Portland Jesuit 2-0 in each of the first two quarters for a health 4-0 half-time lead before putting up five in the third to take a 9-0 advantage into the final quarter.In the fourth, Portland Jesuit finally got its legs, putting up seven goals on the Spartans, but was never able to overcome Skyline’s early lead. Tristan Miller, Nick Mauzy, Ryan Benz and Ian Anderson all had a pair of goals for Skyline in the win.

Skyline (2-2-0) next faces Bellarmine Prep (1-4-0), Tuesday, March 26 in an 8 p.m. start at Skyline High School in Sammamish.                

In other NW Invitational action on Sunday involving Washington state high schools Bellevue downed 2012 Nevada state champion Palo Verde (NV) 9-2, Lake Washington lost to Portland Jesuit (OR) 11-7 and Bainbridge was toppled by Henderson (NV) 11-4.

Also, Lake Oswego (OR) bested New Westminster (BC, Canada) 9-8, Claremont (BC, Canada) ran past Lincoln (OR) 16-6 and Lakeridge (OR) doubled-up Centennial (NV) 12-6.

The annual NW Invitational Boys High School Lacrosse Tournament on Mercer Island concluded Sunday. The tournament included over 380 student-athletes representing 16 of the premiere boys high school lacrosse programs from Washington, Oregon, Nevada and British Columbia. Among the participating schools are the defending state champions from Washington, Oregon and Nevada
