Skyline Junior Leads Washington U-19 Girls to National Title

Washington state’s Under 19 girls high school lacrosse team defeated a regional team from New Hampshire/Vermont to win its division at the annual US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament, Sunday at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
 
The national tournament, which has been contested for eight decades, is one of the largest women’s lacrosse events in the U.S.
 
In the championship game, Washington State was led by Skyline High School junior and 2013 All-Conference selection Katie Bucy with three goals on the way to a 9-6 defeat of New Hampshire/Vermont.  Washington state led 4-3 at the half.
 
Outscoring its opponents 67- 30 in tournament play, Washington State compiled a 3-0-1 record to lead Mohawk Division Pool A.  Its recorded included wins over Pittsburgh (14-7), Orange County/LA (15-4) and a tie with Virginia (10-10) on Saturday before downing Northern California 19-3 on Sunday to advance to the championship game.
 
Seven juniors, 12 sophomores and three freshman from 14 Washington state high schools were selected from 61 student-athletes in grades 9-11 during tryouts in late March.
 
Student-athletes from the following high schools made up the Washington State Girls U-19 Team; Lakeside (3), Overlake (3), Eastside Catholic (2), Glacier Peak, (2) Issaquah (2), Bainbridge (2), Auburn Riverside (1), Bellevue (1), Holy Names (1), Mercer Island (1), Northwest School (1), Sammamish (1), Skyline (1) and Roosevelt (1).  The team was coached by Bainbridge High School’s Tami Tommila and Lakeside School’s Jamie Asaka.
 
The US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament was first contested in 1933 to showcase the best post-collegiate and club women’s lacrosse players.  Since that time, the tournament has grown into one of the larges women’s lacrosse events in the nation.  The Schoolgirls’ Division is one of the top recruiting events in the nation with student-athletes from 31 states competing in seven divisions.  Over 1,400 student-athletes representing 66 teams from 31 states competed at the 80th annual tournament presented by Harrow Sports and the HLA Foundation.
