The Slurpee is 45 years old today.
The date is July 11. That's Seven-Eleven. Guess what that means?
Today, as has become an annual tradition, about 8,200 participating 7-Eleven stores nationwide are offering free 7.11-ounce Slurpee between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The first 7-Eleven store opened in 1927, meaning the convenience store chain is marking its 85th anniversary this year.
“This year we expect to give away 7 million Slurpee drinks, more than ever before, beating last year’s offer by 2 million," said Joe DePinto, 7-Eleven president and CEO, in a media release on the company's Web site.
The company has also created downloadable birthday attire—tiny bowties, hair bows and two sizes of party hats—for those who want to dress for the occasion.
