Mount Si Offers Breath-Taking Sights Regardless of Forecast

Hike: Mount Si
Distance: 8 miles, roundtrip
Elevation Gain: approx. 3,150
Trail: Mostly dirt, some rocks, a few stairs.

Summer is just around the corner. That means it's time to get outside, no matter what the forecast calls for.

I recently hiked Mt. Si for the second time in as many years. On my first visit, I didn't have enough time to scramble up "Haystack," a rocky outcropping that makes up the very tippy-top of Mount Si. I vowed to go back.

I did it this year, and can only assert that it is not for the faint of heart, for small children, or anyone in their right mind. Now I can say I've done it, but I won't likely attempt it again.

The Washington Trails Association fittingly describes it as "The true summit of Si … The haystack does sport a scramble path to its summit, but the route is tricky, with incredible exposure (one slip and you'll plummet hundreds--thousands?--of feet). It's best not to attempt the Haystack, especially considering the added danger of other people kicking loose rock down, creating deadly missiles from above."

The first time I tackled this hike, I'd been warned about how difficult it was. My expectations were set, so in hindsight, the hike didn't seem too difficult and I don't remember being overly sore the following day. Instead, I left with stunning images of sunny, unobstructed summit views.

Two years later with the memory that this hike "wasn't too strenuous," I came off the mountain with a different take.

It is strenuous. My quads were definitely sore the next day. Still, I'll be back soon. Even on an overcast day, hiking through the clouds remains an awe-inspiring experience.

At 4,167-feet elevation, Mount Si's summit views and trail scenery might not be the only reason you'll find yourself short of breath.

Directions

  • From Seattle drive east on I-90 to exit 32 for 436th Avenue SE.
  • Turn left on 436th Avenue SE and drive over the freeway.
  • In about a half mile turn left on North Bend Way.
  • Drive for one-quarter mile and turn right on Mount Si Road. Continue on Mount Si Road for 2.5 miles (past the Little Si parking lot).
  • Turn left into the large trailhead parking.

Parking: Gravel. Get there early to ensure a spot. Park in the back (closer to the road) if you have a large car or truck; it'll make your exit much easier. If you get there before 9 a.m. you might spot Elk or other wildlife.

Facilities: Two pit toilettes at the trailhead (bring your hand sanitizer); there's also a nice rest spot with a couple benches about one mile into the hike.
