Matthew Lillard's 'Fat Kid Rules The World' Filmed In Renton, Premiers At SIFF Opening Night

SIFF-Renton Premier and Gala draws more than 500 to downtown.

Hollywood wasn’t interested in a movie with a message, but actor-turned director Matthew Lillard was. You know, that guy in Scream, Scooby-Doo and most recently The Descendants? “Hollywood just didn’t get it,” Lillard said of Fat Kid Rules the World. The movie might not make the big bucks at the box office, but the story is priceless. Based on the 2003 novel by KL Going, Lillard said the book about a suicidal, overweight teen brought him to tears. “I think this movie has a message that resonates,” he said. “I saw myself in [Troy]. I was lost.” And just like Troy found himself in music, the young Lillard found his purpose in acting. The Renton premier of Fat Kid held special meaning for many audience members who participated as extras in …

How to View Sunday's Solar Eclipse

In the first solar eclipse visible in the U.S. in 18 years, the Earth's moon will pass in front of the sun before sunset on Sunday, casting a giant shadow across the land.

A solar eclipse is expected to be visible across much of the western U.S. on Sunday evening. In the hours before sunset, the Earth's moon will pass in front of the sun—the eclipse will start around 5 p.m. in Seattle, according to KING 5. "Called an annular solar eclipse, the moon and sun will exactly align Sunday, May 20, creating a "ring of fire" around the moon because of the sun's larger apparent size," reported the Huffington Post. The last solar eclipse visible in the U.S. was in 1994. In the Puget Sound region, people will only see a partial eclipse with about 80 percent of the moon covering the sun's diameter, KING 5 reported. The view of the eclipse might be further complicated by grey skies. According to the National Weather …

Avennia Winery is Born From Harmonious Pairing

Their admiration for the music of Miles Davis, such as the album The Birth of the Cool, brought Marty Taucher and Chris Peterson together in business and led to the birth of winery Avennia.

Chris Peterson worships the music of The Grateful Dead. Marty Taucher is a Dave Matthews Band fan. Peterson and Taucher met at DeLille Cellars, where Peterson rose to winemaker and Taucher volunteered during the 2009 harvest.  Despite their diverging musical tastes, Peterson and Taucher struck a chord and have gone into business together. Taucher founded Woodinville-based Avennia Winery in 2010. Peterson consulted during the 2010 harvest before leaving DeLille in May 2011 to become the full-time winemaker at Avennia. They are currently selling their first wines (a Sauvignon Blanc, two Syrahs and two Bordeaux-style blends) to be released next fall and winter. Peterson and Taucher eventually agreed on Miles Davis to bridge their musical gap…
