The district notified parents today that a case was confirmed at Sunset Elementary in Bellevue this week.
One case of Pertussis has been confirmed at Sunset Elementary, an Issaquah school located just west of the city in Bellevue, this week, school officials said in a letter sent to parents on Friday, May 18. Washington State and King County are experiencing a widespread pertussis outbreak. In King County, there were 100 confirmed cases of pertussis reported in the first 3 months of 2012 – the highest number reported for this time of year in the past decade, and more than the reports received in all of last year. Previously, the district had reported one other case this year. A case also was reported this week in Woodinville. Area restaurants are getting in on the Bellevue Jazz Festival, which kicks off at the end of the month.
Local restaurants and venues will be hosting concerts during the 5th Annual Bellevue Jazz Festival from May 30 through June 3. El Gaucho Bellevue, 520 Bar & Grill, Cypress Wine Bar, Z’Tejas, Rock Bottom Brewery and Restaurant, Black Bottle Postern, Grand Cru Mixologie Lounge and Lot No. 3 will be hosting free concerts throughout the festivities. Lincoln Square and Bellevue Square will host additional free concerts. The Clayton Brothers Quintet (May 31), Booker T. Jones (June 1) and the Hubert Laws Quintet (June 2) will be the featured artists during the festival. They will perform paid concerts at the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center. Roy Adler, who has been the school's Principal for 11 years, plans to retire in July.
Roy Adler, a longtime educator and the current principal of Pine Lake Middle School, has announced that he will retire as of July 1. Adler has been on a medical leave of absence, and keeping up with the staff via phone. He said in a letter to parents that his recovery is going well and he is disease free, but follow-up treatment will keep him out of school for the remainder of the school year. He also said that he has decided after 41 years to reevaluate his priorities, and to turn his focus more to his health and recovery. Eastside beat Blanchet 6-4 Saturday, May 12, for the win.
On Saturday, the sun was shining in Seattle and on the Eastside Catholic Crusaders, as they beat Blanchet in extra innings to clinch the Metro Championship with a score of 6-4. They brought home the trophy and did it with fight and class. Jeff Bohling, of Bellevue, hit his second walk off homer to win the game in the bottom of the 9th, while Alex Foley, of Issaquah, pitched nine innings and got the win. Eastside Catholic, with a 16-5 record, will play at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue in the Class 3A regionals.

Substitute bus driver Andrew Rekdahl allegedly downloaded and shared child pornography online; district officials said they don't believe anything inappropriate happened on his routes, which they will publish today.
A substitute bus driver in the Issaquah School District, Andrew Bernard Rekdahl, of Carnation, was arrested Thursday on child pornography charges, King 5 reports. A search warrant was served on Rekdahl's home and though he was not home when agents arrived, they allegedly discovered 194 images of suspected child porn on a laptop found in his bedroom. The man allegedly admitted later to to downloading and sharing child porn on the Internet and was arrested, King 5 said in its report. He was charged with possession and distribution of child porn. Students and families from Eastside Catholic, Skyline, and Eastlake high schools gathered at Eastside Catholic Wednesday to support breast cancer research and have a good time.
A little pink brightened spirits on a mostly sunny afternoon at Eastside Catholic, where the third annual Plateau Pink Day was held yesterday afternoon. Penny Williams, spokeswoman for Eastside Catholic, said leadership students from all three schools work all year to put together the annual event, and raise money for breast cancer research and treatment through sales of the bright pink shirts to students and their families. This year, all proceeds from the sale of shirts and donations will go to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Yesterday's event was filled with smiling faces, loud music (hey, they are teens, after all), and cake--lots of cake--from the busy cakewalk. Incoming superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce has appointed a new Central Leadership Team for the 2012-2013 school year.
Lake Washington School District's incoming superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce announced a new Central Leadership Team for the 2012-2013 school year. The changes go into effect July 1. The Central Leadership team is a group of administrators that supports the strategic work of the district, according to a LWSD news release. Next year's team will be divided into three sections: operational services, student and school support services, and student and professional learning services. The changes will not have any financial impact on the district, according to the news release.
