If you see a mob of teens doing good work today, they are probably from Eastside Catholic School. About 600 high school students from will leave their classrooms this morning and descend on local charities and organizations for some real world experience in paying it forward. Today is the school's Peace and Justice Day, and students will head out this morning to 28 different charities and organizations in the greater Seattle area to work on service projects. The types of projects range from yard work to being in classrooms with elementary school students to sorting. A number of local athletes placed in state, and the action continues with girls' basketball regionals coming up this weekend.
Eastlake High School sophomore Edward Kim smashed the competition in the mens 200-yard freestyle competition at the WIAA championships, finishing more than four seconds in the lead. He brought home the mens' 100-yard backstroke title as well. Meanwhile, a number of local athletes placed in the state competitions in swimming and wrestling. The Skyline Girls' Basketball team won the KingCo District Tournament and takes on the Stanwood Spartans tonight at Stanwood at 7:30 p.m. in competition for a berth at regionals coming up this weekend. If the Spartans win, they'll play Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. at Auburn High School against the winner of district 3/4 matchup, also playing tonight. The Crusaders Varsity Boys Basketball team won WIAA Scholastic honors, and a number of Eastside Athletes are competing in state finals today and tomorrow.
Eastside Catholic is wrapping up its winter sports season with some impressive finishes. The Crusaders Varsity Boys Basketball team tied with Mt. Spokane High School to win top academic honors from the WIAA in the 3A Division of the Scholastic Awards Program, which recognizes the team with the highest grade point average among all Washington high schools in their enrollment classification. The winning teams will be presented with a special plaque at the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Championships. Paintings and drawings by AP Studio Art and Painting students at Eastside Catholic will be on display at the Starbucks on 228th Avenue NE throughout January.
A class of artists from Eastside Catholic descended on Starbucks Thursday morning to celebrate their monthlong show there. Art teacher Megan McDermott, also an Eastside Catholic alumna, said she might rotate the pieces throughout the month, and that there will be future opportunities for student shows at the popular coffee house. Most of the students in the AP class are juniors and seniors, with a few sophomores in the mix as well. The pieces hanging currently are acrylics, oil paints, pen and ink, and figure drawing studies.
