Great Escape: Leavenworth Provides a bit of 'Bavaria'

Visiting Leavenworth makes for a relaxing vacation and a quick one, too. It's only about two hours by car from Sammamish.

Looking for a fun and easy "staycation?" In about two hours by car, you and your spouse or girlfriends can be transported to a simpler place called Leavenworth.  During the off-season, hotel rooms are half as expensive and the hospitality of the town is eager for visitors.

If you have never been to Leavenworth, it is a trip worth taking. The two-hour drive takes you on a gorgeous trip through the snow of Snoqualmie Pass and the lovely forests that surround the Sammamish area. The quaint town offers a Bavarian feel with German street signs and architecture. Without kids in tow, it is fun to stroll through the many different charming shops. A hat shop, bookstore and clothing boutiques are only a few of the many shops that line the main town square.

The eating choices abound. A delightful Gingerbread cafe offers homemade soup and baked goods along with decorated gingerbread houses. For lunch and dinner, choose from several different German restaurants that offer authentic foods from schnitzel to sauerkraut. If you are craving Mexican fare or crepes, you'll find those restaurants here as well. If your hotel doesn't serve breakfast (most do) you won't be disappointed with the different breakfast menus in town.

The nice thing about going to Leavenworth this time of year is the lack of crowds. The stores are open (some are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays)  and you will never have to wait in line. A free trolley runs through the town, taking you from one end to the other. It is easy to just walk the little streets of the main town square where all the shops are located. But at the far end of town, you will find a movie theater and miniature golf. Several of the hotels also offer massage packages if you care to indulge. To work off some of those delicious meals,  head to Waterfront Park, adjacent to downtown. This scenic and easy hike along the Wenatchee River offers a tranquil setting and the chance for some bird watching.

See the city's website for more details and information.

Often during the summer a two-night stay is required in Leavenworth. This month, many hotels offer one-night stays. This allows you to have your escape but get back before you're really missed at home.
